- I can't explain it, but I wanted to see if either hot or cold conditions
- would mess up my Sportster 33.4. I ran a 20 minute download at 26.4k with
- the modem in 105F ambient air temperature -- it did fine. I then got the
- modem very cold (freezer) and did the same experiment. Took two tries to get
- a 26.4k connection again (it started at 24k) but then it did fine, again.
- No disconnects. The modem ran 30+ minutes connection each experiemnt.
-
- I've been reading here on this newsgroup that some folks really don't
- like the Sportster. I've spent nearly all day today tweaking the thing,
- and here's how it's gone:
-
- 1. The Sportster initially had real difficulty with two sites I sometimes
- connect to -- one is 9600bps, the other 14.4k. My old GVC has no problems
- with these, but the Sportster would train down to 4800 on the 14.4k site and
- would freeze on the 9600 site.
-
- Soultion: Set S15=64 -- "MNP incompatibility". Cleared both problems up.
-
- 2. With a 26.4k connection, the Sportster would grind zmodem transfers
- of Macbinary type in the low 2000's.
-
- Solution: Same as above. Now zmodem moves these at 2900+ and hqx files
- got a little faster, too (exceed 3000).
-
- [I'm not saying the above solution is a great idea -- I may very well
- be missing something here! But it did fix the problems. I still connect
- with "CONNECT 26400/ARQ/V34/LAPM/V42BIS"]
-
- 3. The Sportster seems to be doing fine with my ISP; solid connections
- at 26.4k (hot or cold!), save one zmodem crash and burn prior to the
- above MNP fix.
-
- I can't get 28.8k to my ISP with the Sportster V.34+, or with a Global
- Village Platinum V.34, or with a PPI MC288MT II V.34, so I'm not
- going to cite the Sportster for picking 26.4. The phone lines seem to
- be dictating that.
